St Patrick’s Day Festival
The St Patrick’s Day Festival and Leprechaun Chase thrilled the public last week with record crowds in Blackrock Park and Village to celebrate our National Holiday.
The Leprechaun Chase attracted over 2,000 people into Blackrock Park where 4 Leprechauns strutted their stuff and risked life and limb to entertain the kids (and some adults as well)! The Village Square played host to Goodie Bag distribution and Céilí Dancing, and the street was alive with the sounds of reels, jigs …. and the rest!
The big addition this year was the decision by the Principal of Blackrock Further Education Institute (BFEI) to open the college doors to the public. There is a wonderful space in BFEI and it was used to great effect to entertain the masses of children with Face Painting, Story Telling, a Colouring Competition and more. Our sincere thanks go to Tom Taylor, Nicki Cloonan and their staff for being so generous and community spirited in sharing their facilities with us.
Two trad sessions wrapped up the day – one in Kelly & Coopers Pub and the other in Conway’s.
A huge thank you to the organising committee which has worked relentlessly since November to ‘get the show on the road’ – Angela Kelly, Daphne O’Gara, Gillian Mangan, Nicki Cloonan, Lisa Goode, David Twomey, Johnny Sheahan and Tom Feeney. Our thanks also to our many sponsors, to the Gardaí and to whole Blackrock community for their support. We are looking forward to next year already!
Blackrock Further Education Institute – Night Classes
As well as courses for 900 full time day students, BFEI offers evening classes each Monday and Tuesday. The remit of this Night School operation is to provide educational, professional training and social courses for the local community. At present the most popular are Bridge, Bee-keeping, Interior Design and Accounting Technician. However, for its Night School to remain viable and to continue, the college needs increased support from the local community. Business and Community residents and their family and friends are invited to submit suggestions and requirements directly to the Director of Adult Education, Mr. Michael Dineen. Michael’s email is email@example.com .
Blackrock College 5k Fun Run
The 2019 5k Rock Run takes place on Sunday April 7th in the grounds of Blackrock College. Funds raised from the event will go towards supporting GOAL’s life-saving work in the developing world along with the Blackrock College Machakos Programme 2019, where Blackrock College will continue to support our fellow Holy Ghost School in Machakos Kenya, bringing 2nd level education to young Kenyans who may not otherwise get it.
It is a run for all levels – be it competitive, a casual jog or a walk around the grounds of the college as a family. There is a 2.5K, one lap option for our younger entrants!
Registration begins at 9.30 with the race commencing at 11am. It is €10 for a student, €20 for an adult and €35 for a family (two adults and two students). It is a wonderful event for the entire Blackrock Community and is open to all. We hope to see you there on Sunday 7 April 2019!”
