New Music Education Centre for Blackrock?
We may soon have a new Music Education Centre on Main Street in the old Savills building. This is great news and if planning is granted the centre would be a very welcome cultural addition to Blackrock.
A planning application has been submitted to DLRCoCo for a Change of Use permission from Retail/Office to Retail/Educational (Music Education Centre), to include internal fit-out and alteration works consisting of new lesson and instrument rooms, storage and washing facilities on the basement floor with reception, retail, rehearsal, and band rooms on the upper floors. Works would include repointing of mortar to the existing brickwork and new signage to the external front elevation, and all ancillary site and removal works with rear access off Bath Place. Commercial Rates Waiver
For first quarter of 2021
The Government announced Level 5 restrictions, including the closure of non-essential businesses, from close of business on 31 December 2020. Further restrictions were announced on 6 January 2021.
In order to reflect these restrictions and to continue the supports available for ratepayers, and in recognition of the impact of the on-going trajectory of COVID 19, the Government has announced a further waiver of commercial rates which will apply to specified businesses in the first quarter of 2021. This 100% three month waiver has modified criteria and accordingly is a separate, standalone waiver scheme.
Further details and the categories of business eligible and ineligible for the waiver are shown in the FAQs.

Blackrock punches above its weight!
The past year has made dining out somewhat of a nightmare both for the public and for the hard pressed restauranteurs. However in the midst of all the gloom there is good news to carry forward! As of now, Liath has retained its Michelin star; Volpe Nera has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand; and 3 Leaves has retained its Michelin Plate. Aside from these three we have several other very impressive eateries with the number of restaurants setting up in Blackrock steadily increasing. We can’t wait to dine out in Blackrock again!
Former Europa Garage Site
The former Europa Garage site on Newtown Avenue, Blackrock has lain idle for the best part of 2 decades and despite a number of false dawns, nothing to date has happened by way of development of this prime site. Following that, a full planning application for a Proposed Strategic Housing Development (SHD) in respect of the c. 0.49 ha site was submitted on 9 December 2020.
The proposed development would comprise 101 residential units of 1-6 storeys with accommodation at roof level in two Pavilion style buildings. The apartment units would consist of 51 no.1-bed units, 42 no.2-bed units and 8 no.3-bed units all with associated private balconies/terraces to the north/south/east/west elevations together with a basement level which shall provide for 73 no. car parking spaces; 194 no. bicycle spaces; plant areas; switch room; bin storage area; and surface water attenuation tank. Cluain Mhuire and Mental Wellbeing
Can you help?
COVID-19 has impacted employment, mental health, and anxiety about the unknown.
Cluain Mhuire, Blackrock are very familiar with anxiety and mental health and have also introduced a proactive approach by including Employment Specialists to each of its three Teams. This new initiative is intended to support a return to work for people who have had extended employment absence due to mental health. Mental health, or mental wellbeing, can be described as the way we think and feel about ourselves, and others, in particular our confidence and our ability to control things in our life. A large majority of people recover their mental health, especially if they get help early.
One of the many options of support is employment, and Cluain Mhuire are actively seeking part-time or full time roles for people who are qualified, capable and committed to employment but gaps, confidences, and that sense of identity have all been eroded. If you think you can help, the employment support team would be delighted to meet, and discuss our recruitment potential.
